Sewage Overflow Basics & the Role of the Homeowner

"Sewage 101" Everyday we flush the toilet, drain dirty bath water or perhaps pour old cooking oil down the sink drain without thinking where it goes next.  The wastewater or sewage we generate in our homes travels through a pipe, called a house lateral, that connects our homes to the public sewage system.

Click on the following link to see the causes overflows, how storm water gets into a sanitary sewer system and what your role as a homeowner is.

WEF Public Education

"Be in the Know ...Go with the Flow" is an interactive online map provided by WEF that will allow you to walk through the wastewater treatment process. One step at a time, the Clean Water Plant has been divided into 15 components represented by icons. When clicked on, each component's icon comes up with a one paragraph, non-technical narrative description. Viewers can follow the path step-by-step, or jump around to locate a particular area of interest.  We hope you enjoy your this tour of the Wastewater Reclamation process.
